Year 6 & Reception Buddies

We are a village school; our small, family feel is a strength and this is further enhanced by our Buddy System.

Buddying up Year 6 children with Reception children is a truly wonderful initiative for several reasons. It not only fosters meaningful relationships but also creates a nurturing school environment that benefits both older and younger students.

  • Building Relationships: This program promotes a strong sense of community within the school. Year 6 students become role models and mentors, helping Reception children feel more connected and secure. These relationships often extend beyond the classroom, fostering a supportive atmosphere throughout the school.
  • Easing the Transition: Starting school can be a daunting experience for Reception children. Having a buddy from Year 6 can significantly reduce their anxiety. The familiar face of an older friend can make the large, bustling school environment seem less intimidating, helping the younger children settle in more quickly and comfortably.
  • Positive Role Models: Year 6 students serve as positive role models for the Reception children. They demonstrate appropriate behaviour, school routines, and social skills, which the younger children can emulate. This mentoring relationship encourages a sense of responsibility and maturity in the older students.
  • Support During Lunches: Lunchtime can be overwhelming for Reception children, with new routines and a busy dining hall. Year 6 buddies can help them navigate this new environment, assist with finding their seats, opening lunch boxes, and making healthy food choices. This support ensures a smoother and more enjoyable lunchtime experience for the younger students.
  • Encouraging a Love for Reading: One of the most delightful aspects of this buddy system is the opportunity for Reception children to be read to by their Year 6 buddies. This not only helps improve their listening and comprehension skills but also instills a love for reading. For the older children, it enhances their reading fluency and confidence.
  • Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem: The responsibility of looking after a younger buddy boosts the self-esteem and confidence of Year 6 students. They feel valued and appreciated, knowing they are making a positive impact. For Reception children, having an older friend who cares for them can significantly boost their confidence and sense of belonging.
  • Developing Social Skills: This buddy system provides a valuable opportunity for both age groups to develop essential social skills. Year 6 students learn patience, empathy, and leadership, while Reception children learn to communicate, cooperate, and build friendships.

Creating a Positive School Culture: Overall, buddying up Year 6 and Reception children cultivates a positive, inclusive school culture. It encourages kindness, cooperation, and mutual respect, setting a strong foundation for a supportive and harmonious school community.

Our Buddy system creates a nurturing environment where every child can flourish.
