At Aston and Cote Church of England School, serving others is an important part of living out our vision and values. We encourage all members of our school community to think about how they can make a positive difference, both within school and beyond.
Within school, pupils take on roles of responsibility that support and care for others. Older pupils act as playground leaders and buddies for younger children, helping to create a safe, inclusive and happy environment. Our School Council meets regularly to discuss ways we can support others and decides which charities we will champion each year.
We are proud to support a range of charities, both locally and nationally. These have included Besom, a local charity supporting families in need; the Royal British Legion, where we take part in Remembrance by selling poppies and related items; as well as national appeals such as Children in Need and Comic Relief.
Our commitment to community extends beyond fundraising. At Christmas and Easter, we visit the Wednesday Club lunch at the village hall, where pupils sing for older residents, bringing joy and connection across generations. Reception children also visit Rosebank Care Home each month, where they spend time sitting, playing and chatting with residents, building meaningful relationships and understanding the importance of kindness and companionship.
Within school, our Community Citizens take pride in caring for our environment and supporting others. Their roles include litter picking, helping to keep shared spaces tidy, serving milk and fruit to younger pupils, and ensuring cloakrooms are neat and organised. In addition, our annual Community Citizenship Week sees all pupils actively involved in serving the local area. Younger children help care for the playing fields, while older pupils take responsibility for litter picking in the village, learning what it means to be responsible and active citizens.
As part of our annual Remembrance focus, all pupils visit the Aston War Memorial to pay their respects. We hold a short, reflective service where wreaths are laid, and poems and prayers are shared. This is often attended by members of the local community, strengthening the connection between school and village.
Through these experiences, we aim to instil a lifelong understanding of service, compassion and responsibility, helping our pupils to grow into thoughtful and active members of society.
