In Fletcher Class, we aim to ensure children reach their full potential. We know that every child is unique and we make sure we give them the opportunity to grow their individual talents. We are committed to ensuring children learn in a safe and happy environment. It is important that children enjoy coming to school! We will always celebrate their achievements and instil the idea that mistakes are part of the learning process.

Our Learning Journey

Summer 2

This term, Year 2 are diving into the exciting topic of pirates! In History, we’ll be exploring the fascinating world of piracy, including a closer look at the life of the infamous pirate Blackbeard.

In Art, we’re turning our focus to Canadian artist Margarethe Vanderpas, using her work as inspiration to create our own ocean-themed masterpieces with water as our medium, experimenting with mixed media and wet-on-wet techniques.

We're also looking forward to our whole school trip to the beach and taking part in the fun and energy of Sports Day!

Summer 1

Our topic this term is all about the Polar Regions. The children will be learning where these icy areas are located in relation to the world’s continents and oceans. We’ll be exploring the unique weather in the Arctic and Antarctic, discovering the fascinating animals that live there, and learning about how their habitats are being affected by climate change.

In Design and Technology, we’ll be taking inspiration from traditional Inuit art to create our own wall hangings using weaving techniques. This hands-on project will help develop fine motor skills and creativity, while deepening our understanding of polar culture.

We are also very excited about our upcoming residential trip to Hill End Outdoor Education Centre. This will be a fantastic opportunity for children to develop independence, work as a team, and learn practical outdoor skills such as bug hunting, den building, and toasting marshmallows. It promises to be a fun and unforgettable experience!

Spring 2

This term, our topic is 'Fantastic Forests'. We will be reading the story 'The Tin Forest' by Helen Ward as inspiration for our learning this term. We will be learning all about plants, flowers and trees focussing on what plants needs to grow, how they stay healthy and their life cycles.

In art, we will be looking at 3D sculpture. Our focus artist will be Anthony Gormley.

In geography, we will explore everyday materials and their properties. We will use simple compass directions and locational language to describe location and features on a map. In French, we will be learning the names of minibeasts.

Finally, in music we will be looking at reggae styles of music! We will be learning a song called 'Zootime'.

We will also be doing lots of fun activities related to the celebration of Easter!
