At Aston and Cote Church of England School, our vision — Aspiring to be the people God created us to be by growing the talents He gave us — is central to how we nurture spiritual flourishing across our school community. We believe that every child is unique and valued, and that developing spiritually is an essential part of becoming the person God intends them to be.

At Aston and Cote, we define spirituality as: “Spirituality involves encouraging children to explore connections with something greater than themselves, in search of meaning, purpose and inner peace. It provides opportunities for self-reflection, the development of values, and practices that nurture the spirit. It includes the encouragement of awe and wonder and a sense of interconnectedness with the universe. Spirituality may involve any religion or none, but as a Church of England School, we ensure children have opportunities to learn about the Christian God and to experience worship and prayer in the context of the Christian faith.”

We believe it is vital to provide all children with a wide range of opportunities to support their spiritual development. Spirituality is not limited to Religious Education or Collective Worship; it is woven throughout our curriculum and underpins our wider personal development offer.

As a school, we focus on four key concepts of spirituality: self, others, the world, and beauty and beyond. Through these, we help children to explore their identity, relationships, place in the world, and experiences of awe and wonder.

We structure our approach through three stages: windows, mirrors and doors.

Windows are opportunities to learn about life. We give children experiences that open their eyes to the world in new ways, encouraging them to reflect on life’s ‘wows’ — moments of wonder and amazement — and ‘ows’ — times of difficulty or uncertainty. Through this, children begin to understand life in all its fullness.

Mirrors are opportunities to learn from life. Children are encouraged to reflect on their experiences, to think deeply about big questions, and to consider how events and ideas make them feel. These moments support them in developing their own insights while also appreciating the perspectives of others.

Doors are opportunities to live life. Children are given the chance to respond to their reflections through action — whether creatively, practically or socially. This enables them to express their beliefs and values, and to begin living them out in meaningful ways.

Through this carefully planned approach, we enable all children to grow spiritually, equipping them to reflect, respond and flourish as individuals. In doing so, they are supported in living out our school vision each day, becoming the people God created them to be.
