‘The school’s curriculum is exceptionally well considered and holds terrific appeal for pupils.” OFSTED 2018
At Aston and Cote CE Primary we teach an enquiry based, creative curriculum that is focused on key concepts, skills, high standards and enjoyment and is centred around our Christian values.
The National Curriculum is organised in Key Stages. Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7 in Years 1 and 2) and Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11 in Years 3-6).The Foundation Stage curriculum is followed by children in the Nursery and Reception classes. The curriculum is delivered using a variety of teaching methods – whole class, group and individual teaching. Whole school planning procedures include schemes of work and lesson plans. Work is planned to meet the individual needs of each pupil.
In our Early Years and Key Stage 1 classes we teach phonics and early reading skills using Read, Write Inc. We continue to teach reading into Key Stage 2 with daily whole class reading sessions. Maths is taught daily using the Power Maths programme and is focused on ensuring a solid grasp of mastery of key concepts using the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach.
Our English lessons are based on a whole class text, often linked to our topic. After becoming immersed in the story, the children use this to inspire their own writing. Wherever possible, spelling and grammar are also taught through the class text.
One session of sport a week is taught by the class teacher and the other is taught by our specialist coach Mr Sam Hook. We take part in a variety of competitions in and out of school that are co-ordinated by the Witney Partnership.
We offer musical tuition for a variety of instruments and whole class tuition in the ocarina and the ukulele.
We teach History, Geography, Art and DT through a creative concept themed approach.
We incorporate IT through other subjects and teach specific skills during our weekly computing lessons.
Our outdoor facilities enhance the learning experiences for our children further: we have a pond, a spiritual garden, a wildlife area, an array of outdoor equipment and an outdoor classroom.
Our children also attend two residential visits during their time with us as well as various trips and other special events to enrich our provision.
