‘Pure mathematics is, in it’s way, the poetry of logical ideas.’
Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world.
These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and development, and in public decision-making.
Different cultures have contributed to the development and application of mathematics. Today, the subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised.
Mathematics is a creative discipline. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when a pupil solves a problem for the first time, discovers a more elegant solution to that problem, or suddenly sees hidden connections.
Here at Aston & Cote, we use Power Maths, a whole-school mastery programme which is designed to spark curiosity and excitement and to nurture confidence in Maths. Central to Power Maths is the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach – pupils are introduced to a new concept using concrete materials (e.g. fruit, Dienes blocks, etc.) after which they solve problems with pictures before progressing to solving more abstract problems.
Each year we offer a range of additional opportunities in this subject for example our highest attaining pupils in upper key stage 2 have the chance to participate in Mathematics Master classes at Henry Box and are entered into the National Primary Mathematics Challenge competition. For pupils who may need additional support, we offer small focus groups and the opportunity for extra lessons with our popular Early Bird tutoring scheme.
Here are the calculation methods that all schools must use now with the new curriculum:
