Principles and Aims for Splitting Year Groups

We are a small village school; our small, family feel is a strength. We have six classes however there are seven year groups in any primary school and so it is inevitable that at some point every class will need to be split for at least one year. They will also always come together at different points along the way.

Our teachers are experienced in differentiating for the different ability ranges and we plan our curriculum carefully to ensure coverage and quality learning.

The governors have agreed a set of principles and aims when splitting year groups:

  • Wherever possible, we aim to keep the key stages separate – Foundation Stage (4-5 years), Key Stage 1 (5-7 years) and Key Stage 2 (7-11 years)
  • Wherever possible, we aim to keep all class sizes as small as we can in order to maintain a warm, family feel
  • We will base any splitting decisions, primarily,  on age/birth dates
  • We will carefully track the progress of any split cohorts to ensure equality of progress
  • We will try to ensure equality of opportunity and provision across classes where cohorts are split so that no child is at a disadvantage
