Our Curriculum

‘The curriculum is engaging and exciting and provides pupils with many memorable experiences.’ OFSTED 2010

At Aston and Cote CE Primary we teach an enquiry based, creative curriculum that is focused on key concepts, skills, high standards and enjoyment within a whole school centred around Christian values.

The National Curriculum is organised in Key Stages.  Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7 in Years 1 and 2) and Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11 in Years 3-6).The Foundation Stage curriculum is followed by children in the Reception Class. The curriculum is delivered using a variety of teaching methods, sometimes whole class, sometimes group and sometimes individual. Whole school planning procedures include schemes of work and lesson plans. We teach a creative curriculum, and work is planned to meet the individual needs of each pupil.

In our Early Years and Key Stage 1 class we teach phonics and early reading skills using Read, Write Inc.  We continue to teach reading into Key Stage 2 with daily guided reading sessions.  Maths is taught daily using the Inspire Maths programme  and is focused on ensuring a solid grasp of mastery of key concepts using the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach.

We are a ‘Talk for Writing’ school and we would like our children to be wonderful writers and excellent thinkers.  Talk for Writing activities are planned into our weekly curriculum and we have seen a very positive impact from this approach to teaching writing.

Some of our sport is taught by our wonderful, enthusiastic specialist coach Miss Lisa Brown  and we take part in a variety of competitions in and out of school that are co-ordinated by the Witney Partnership. We offer musical tuition for a variety of instruments and whole class tuition in the ocarina, the ukulele and brass.

We teach History, Geography, Art and DT through a creative concept themed approach.

We incorporate IT through other subjects and teach specific skills during our weekly computing lessons.

Our outdoor facilities enhance the learning experiences for our children further: we have a pond, prayer flag and reflection area, wildlife area, an array of outdoor equipment and an outdoor classroom.

Our children also attend two residential visits during their time with us as well as various trips and other special events to enrich our provision.

The school has internal procedures for monitoring the teaching and learning.  These involve the Headteacher, Senior Leaders and Curriculum Co-ordinators.

All policies are available in school for parents to read.
